In Search of Contrast

Posted: September 12, 2016 in Uncategorized
When I’m working my way through a woods or field looking for subjects, my eyes are scanning for contrast. I’m looking for subjects that have contrast in colors, or light and dark.
Here is an oak leaf in a downed tree trunk that has very little in contrast. The leaf which is the main subject, is very similar in color to the background of the tree trunk, and not enough contrast to make the leaf stand out. I wouldn’t generally shoot this as it just doesn’t have the impact I’m looking for.

Here is a great example of what I’m looking for, a nice strong contrast in the main subject and the background.
A much stronger image then the last one.
This image was the fall cover of Nature Photography Magazine a few years ago.

The strong contrast of the yellow flowers against the muted earthtones really helps to make the flowers pop.

Look at the beautiful contrast in the colors.
In 2005 this image won “image of the year” in the flora category at NaturePhotographers.net.
