Who do you shoot for – you or the viewer

We all want to photograph stuff and styles that we like, but we don’t always get the response we would like from our viewers

______________________________________________

Lets say you are showing your photos and the reaction is not good, do you make changes to what and how you shoot

or

Do you just keep on photography what makes you happy, even though nobody likes your photography

______________________________________________

We like showing off our photos, and I can’t imagine anyone that doesn’t what to hear great responses from viewers

I have had photographers tell me they don’t care what anyone thinks of their photography

Do you care what other people think when you show your images

Doesn’t it feel good when people want to hang your photos on their walls rather then not hang them

_____________________________________________

So would you make the changes needed to get the responses you would like to hear

or

Keep doing what you are doing regardless of what people think

There is no right or wrong answer

  1. Yes, I do care that others like (or not) my photos. But, I’m not trying to sell, so I haven’t changed because of others. However, I do listen for constructive critiques and take them into account for learning purposes.

  2. I shoot for me. Sometimes I get feedback I don’t always agree with but it does not change my photography. I had a spot of photography depression I guess you would call it this year as I was letting other peoples comments get into my head ,so had to give myself a shake and get back to just enjoy my images for what they mean to me and find a way to enjoy photography again. Comments and feed back are great but if you like your style and it appeals to you then it can be hard to not let others influence your view of the world but hang tough and the others may come around. Lensbaby is my favorite lens and it does not always garner me the comments I would rather hear so I have learned to get myself back on track and shoot from the heart rather than my head. Cheers

  3. [...] I admire, recently posted on his blog asking us to think about why we shoot. The post can be viewed here . Do you shoot to share your work? Do you shoot to please others? Do you shoot to make a [...]

  4. I spent most of my career designing and making quilts to sell. Everything I did was with “sale” in mind. When I sold my business and got into photography it was strictly for myself. I photograph what and how I like.
Constructive criticism and advice has helped me improve tremendously. I haven’t changed anything I’ve shot, but I have applied what I learned to each subsequent image. It’s taken me awhile, but I think I found my niche now and will continue to stick with what I like – which includes tweaking my images in Photoshop.

  5. I shoot for me because if I am not happy with what I am doing.. I will eventually walk away from it. I care about others liking my work, I desire them too, but having only been shooting for a short while I have also learned that if I am marionette to what they like, with how fickle the masses can be, the results can be devastating. I almost walked away once. Now it’s for me.. and I share and if someone enjoys my work, even one person.. that’s great.
